This is by far the finest John W. Smith knife that I have ever seen. It features Gem Quality Gold Bearing Quartz inlays. This material is almost impossible to acquire today. The price alone is 3 times the spot price of 24Kt Gold. At the time this knife was made the spot price of 24Kt Gold was $600 and the cost of the Gold Quartz was $2,400. At today's 24Kt gold spot price of $1,766 it would cost over $7,000 to purchase the Gold Quartz alone, that is if you could find it.

John W. Smith met with the Gold dealer and hand picked and hand matched every piece of quartz that is featured in this knife. I had a lengthy conversation with John about this knife and he told me it is one of a kind and that he would not make another. He explained that it was extremely difficult and time consuming to cut and fit the mosaic quartz pieces together to form the sunburst inlays.
