Alex J Collins

Alex J. Collins was a beloved African-American custom knifemaker based in California, active from the mid-1970s until his passing in 2001. A long-time member of the Knifemakers’ Guild, he earned renown for his freehand grinds and uniquely shaped blades—from daggers to bowies—crafted without jigs or templates. Collins worked closely with John Nelson Cooper in the ‘70s, and frequently showcased at major knife shows under his “Kustom Krafted Knives” label. Known for his humor and generosity, he even crafted props for Hollywood films like Edward Scissorhands, leaving a legacy of artistry and camaraderie.
