Kevin Harvey MS Custom Knife The Whistlers Tri-Flail
This extraordinary three-tailed flail is a remarkable collaboration between Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey, along with their apprentice De Wet Van Zyl. Their combined craftsmanship and creativity are clearly evident in this impressive piece.
The Middle Ages was a brutal period marked by frequent warfare, with feudal lords and knights often wielding weapons like the flail. The flail was a powerful tool of combat, used by both knights and foot soldiers. This particular flail would have certainly been a coveted weapon among warriors of that time.
The weighted spikes are crafted from Damascus steel and are connected by hand-forged chains, alternating between wrought iron and Damascus links. The wrought iron is sourced from 19th-century wagon wheels, adding a layer of history to the weapon. The haft is made from a Damascus rod with a twisted pattern, while the handle is wrapped in twisted copper wire for a secure and comfortable grip. The pommel is forged from wrought iron reclaimed from an ox-wagon wheel rim, and it’s separated from the skull crusher by finely-filed brass spacers.
Each chain measures 35 inches in length, and the Damascus haft is about 27 inches long. The individual links are approximately 2 1/2 inches in length, with each spike/weight measuring roughly 2.2 inches. The attention to detail and quality craftsmanship are evident in the flawless fit and finish throughout.
