Kuzan Oda

In the mid-to-late 1970s, Kuzan Oda immersed himself in the world of American custom knifemaking. For roughly two years (approximately 1976–1978), he worked closely in the shop of legendary knifemaker R.W. Loveless, grinding a large number of blades that were sold under Loveless’ name. Oda later quipped that he could grind Loveless designs “with his eyes closed,” a testament to his exceptional skill and deep familiarity with the master’s distinctive hollow grinds and elegant lines.
During this period, he also spent several months in 1977 at Cooper Knives, where he collaborated with Clif Lenderman on a series of designs. Oda personally produced around 15 examples of the resulting Oda-Lenderman models—rare pieces that often incorporated Loveless-style components. His American-era work centered on practical yet refined knives: hunting blades, fighters, daggers, and utility models featuring thin, razor-sharp edges, premium stag or ironwood handles, and the signature Loveless-inspired grinds, including the iconic American tanto tip.
A selection of his designs reached broader audiences through limited production runs by Pacific Cutlery (the company that later evolved into Benchmade). Most notable were his tanto models, which remain highly sought-after collector pieces today. Folding knives were exceptionally rare in his output—he made only about ten in total—with surviving examples distinguished by their bold, robust construction, including oversized pivot pins and precisely dovetailed handles.
